About Us
Gowerlabs is an optical neuroimaging company that has been developing, manufacturing, and selling functional near-infrared spectroscopy technologies in a range of markets and territories since our incorporation in 2013.
Developed by an expert team of engineers and physicists with decades of experience in the field, our non-invasive near-infrared imaging devices are being used around the world. We are proud to support brilliant research, from up-and-coming early career fellows all the way the pioneers of fNIRS and DOT.

The NTS fNIRS system was developed by Gowerlabs CEO Dr Nick Everdell and Prof. David Delpy, one of the pioneers of fNIRS. It was designed to be flexible, smaller and less complex than existing optical topography systems, to enable application to a wide variety of experimental and clinical investigations (Everdell, 2005). Featuring up to 16 sources and 16 detectors, the NTS facilitates full head coverage with high spatial and temporal resolution. Multiple source-detector separations enable three-dimensional tomographic image reconstruction.
In 2013, Dr Everdell founded Gowerlabs Ltd to begin producing the NTS commercially, allowing this innovative technology to be available for researchers worldwide. The system is in use across four continents, enabling numerous high profile and high impact applications since its inception.
As a robust, non-invasive, and portable device, the NTS has been used successfully in challenging environments, from remote regions in developing countries to ICUs in the UK.

With decades of experience in the field, we were familiar with the limitations of traditional devices, such as cumbersome optical fibre bundles, limited channel count, and a time consuming setup process. Gowerlabs changed all of this with a completely novel approach: removing fibres, and placing all the electronics and optics directly on the head.
In 2019 we officially launched LUMO: a wearable, scalable, high-density brain imaging technology with unprecedented functional imaging capability.
At the heart of LUMO is the tile: a revolutionary patented hexagonal sensor module that houses three sources and four detectors of near-infrared light. By enabling measurements both within and across tiles, up to 48 fNIRS channels can be obtained using just two LUMO tiles. By connecting multiple tiles into our specially designed headgear, users can instantly create high-density fNIRS arrays that enable 3D functional brain imaging at a resolution comparable to that of fMRI, and all in a wearable, easy-to-use and subject-friendly package.
Gowerlabs is a research & development company at its core, so we are constantly improving and developing LUMO to ensure it remains a cutting edge technology able to help you achieve your research goals, no matter how ambitious they are.
